10 Top Concentration Killers, Part 1

Dear Reader,

It's hard to pay attention sometimes... whether you're an adult with ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder), or merely struggle to stay focused and "on task" at times, today's world is loaded with distractions that can disrupt your best intentions. Because there are so many we've created a two-part piece. Some of the things you'll learn about here will not surprise you... others certainly will.

Here are the first five culprits, along with smart ways to keep them from killing your concentration.

1. Stress - when you feel like you are carrying too heavy a load of responsibilities it can be tough to focus on one task. Stress also takes a noticeable toll on your body, your shoulders might be tight, you may have headaches or a racing heartbeat. All these make concentrating pretty tough.

Learning some stress management - meditation for instance, is a smart idea. In one study a team found that those who took an eight-week meditation class improved their focus. Try a class close to you, or look for instructions online.

2. Social Media - is a wonderful, accessible tool we can use to keep in touch with family, friends or past work associates, maybe meet new people online who share an interest. The down side is that it's also something that draws you away from concentration, many times each and every hour. Every status update cuts into your train of thought, making you naturally have to backtrack for a bit when you get back to your "real" work.

To fight back, don't log into social media sites at work. If you must check in, do it during a break. You might also want to turn off the alert sounds so that this noise doesn't intrude on your concentration, prompting you to go check out an alert, "just this once". You can also take your work someplace where social media, and your devices, can't find you, just for a few hours.

Despite what you're being trained to think, it is okay to be offline for a while.

3. Email - another fantastic tool, but seeing that list of unopened emails in your inbox has the power to pull you away from what you should be doing. You won't make any progress if you stop what you're doing every time a new email arrives.

Your best bet is to set aside specific times of day (first thing, lunch time, mid afternoon, before leaving) to check email, and don't vary off those times. Shut down your email program, or turn off the alert sounds, to give yourself time to work without interruption.

4. Cell Phones - you saw this one coming, no doubt, but your must-carry cell is actually a big distraction. The ring of that phone is hard to ignore... but stopping to take the call takes time to have the conversation and zaps your momentum on a task you're working to complete.

The smart choice here is to put the caller ID feature to good use. If the call isn't urgent, let it go to voicemail. Silencing your phone is another good option so you're not even tempted to answer. Set special times to check your voicemail, as listening to all your messages at once is less disruptive than taking each call as they come.

5. Fatigue - if you're struggling to stay awake, this can make it hard to concentrate, to stay focused. Studies have found that too little sleep can affect both your attention span and short-term memory.

Try your hardest to get from 7 to 9 hours of good quality sleep each night. Make sleep a priority and be sure to practice good sleep habits. This will help you be more rested, get more done when you're awake. Also, pay attention to what times of day you feel most alert; then schedule your most demanding tasks for this time.
